Laura Hair Color

In the episode I believe its "No Place Like Home" Laura supposidly sassed Mr. Standish. When Mr. Standish goes and tells Charles about it he said "Your daughter sassed me, the one with the red hair". Does Lauras hair look red to anyone? You can see it is Brown. A pretty dark brown. I don't even think it has a red tint to it. Does anyone understand this?

Even in the books and the new series they are always talking about how Lauras hair is brown.

Melissa Gilbert has some red hairs... a mixed of brown and red...

I can understand your confusion. Certainly Laura is frequently described in the books as having brown hair. But LHOTP Fan is right -- Melissa Gilbert definitely had a reddish tint to her hair as a child. Depending on the scene and the lighting it is not always as obvious as it is at other times. IMO, you can see it best in scenes where Laura wears her hair down.

I was just watching "Back To School" on DVD the other day. There is a scene in the second part of that episode where Ma is talking to Laura up in the loft -- the one where she tells Laura that if she doesn't want Almanzo to think of her as a little girl, then she should stop acting like one. (This is the scene that follows the scene at the Wilder house when Charles punches Almanzo and Laura runs away towards home). Anyway, Melissa's red tints are VERY obvious in this scene between Laura/Ma. When her hair is braided or up in a bun (as it is most of the time on LH), the red highlights are not as obvious, but they can still be noticed of one looks closely enough.

I am guessing that Melissa Gilbert's current hair color (much more on the reddish side than brown) comes from the bottle at this point. But there is no doubt that her natural color is a combo of brown/red.

P.S. Just thought I'd add this link to Winkipedia. Melissa is definitely included on its list of famous people with NATURALLY red hair. ;)

Here's another link. You can see the reddish tint in this one. ;)

Oh thanks for clearing it up. But why did they say red hair on the show. Especially if her hair color on the show did come from a bottle. They were trying for brown its funny they didn't say brown haired daughter. Oh well. Its just kind of interesting. What color of hair does Melissa have now?

No no. When I said I assume her hair color comes from a bottle, I mean NOW. I meant that as an adult (and at 41) I'm assuming Melissa now colors her hair. I could be wrong, but I just assume it seeing as most adults these days (and especially actors) use color on their hair either to cover up grey or to enhance their natural color.

Her hair color on the show when she was a kid was totally natural as far as I can tell.

I remember seeing that episode for the first time and saying, "redhead?!" I can tell she had some (natural) red and gold highlights, but I always thought of Laura as a brunette.

In the premiere movie and the earlier episodes, Laura's hair looks more brown to me, then it gets the reddish tint later in the season. Maybe the Simi Valley sun lighted her hair some.

Didn't Rose have red hair (when she was old enough)? So I think Laura was supposed to be a red-head on the show.

Yeah you can definately see it in that picture. Her hair does what mine does. When its in the sun it looks redish/brown, and when its out of the sun its dark brown. Happy birthday Dean Butler!

As a person with very dark brown hair, I can tell you that the sun turns my hair reddish. That's probably what happened to Melissa's hair on the show. She was in the sun a lot. The poor kid was always running somewhere.

Another ep where Melissa/Laura's red highlights are extremely noticeable is "Sweet Sixteen." You can't miss the reddish tints in her hair during the last scene where she talks to Almanzo in the back room of Nellie's. ;)

Yeah -- that is the scene (from "Sweet Sixteen") that I reference in the post above -- the one where Laura talks to Almanzo in the back room of Nellie's. When you watch the scene itself you can actually see the red even more than in my avatar! :)

if you click private messages on the top right hand corner of the screen, it'll bring to your private messages. click edit avatar on the left hand side and if you click browse you can upload a picture that you have saved on your computer.

In the third episode of season 4 titled "My Ellen" (when Laura's friend Ellen drowns and her mother kidnaps Laura to "replace" her), you can really tell MG's hair is quite red. I think (as was stated in a previous post) it's because it was down and not in braids.
